Monetize your natural writing talent by launching your own freelance writing side hustle business! With only a few hours per week, you can write your way out. Scroll down for everything you need to know about the course.

You’ve heard of freelance writing and it sounds like a sweet deal: only a laptop and WiFi as your starting costs, working from home, flexible hours…It sounds perfect, right?

Not to mention working with international clients (hello, exchange rates!), writing about things you’re interested in and never having to wear a bra…It’s a dream side hustle.

And maybe one day it could even be your 9 to 5. Or your 7 to 3. Or hey, your 11 to 2.

You know you have a way with words. You wouldn’t even be looking at this page if you hated writing. And you think you can monetize it.

It’s just that…Where to start?

When looking for resources online, you see hundreds of thousands of videos, articles, downloads and more. Where do you even start?

Then, the producers of these resources are all full-time. Self-professed ‘gurus’ telling you to “just take the leap” and quit your job.

In this economy?!

So you look into side hustles instead. It seems safer to start part-time – fair enough.

That’s what I did.

And so you spend hours and hours searching for something in all that free content that will actually be useful but it’s all just fluff and filler, or it has an eye-watering price tag to get to the useful stuff.

And there’s so, so much out there that it’s overwhelming.

You peek into copywriting groups on Facebook and panic at the hundreds of thousands of people in there, charging next to nothing, vying for ‘opportunities’ that are borderline exploitative.

Then you do the only thing that helps preserve your sanity.

You put it off.

Freelance writing will happen for you…some day. Not now, when it chews up countless hours without getting anywhere tangible.

You decide the industry is oversaturated. There’s no room for someone like you.

You decide those stories of writers earning a dollar per word are just that: stories.

You start considering other side hustles. Or you give up on the side hustle idea completely, even when you know you need it. There are bills to pay, responsibilities to uphold, people who depend on you.

And writing…well, you’re so good at it. And it seemed like such a good idea. At least, until the sense of overwhelm hit.

And then that doubtful voice in your head gets louder.

The voice that says you won’t make it as a writer anyways. Too many writers out there already. Terrible pay. Can’t make it without committing full-time and risking a negative bank balance if you can’t pay bills.

So you close your tabs, pull up your budgeting spreadsheet and look where else you can cut back. Who needs butter, anyway? You tell yourself that it’s just a matter of thinking smarter when it comes to monthly spending.

Except, you’re not giving up that easily. You’re still here, reading this, because deep down you know you have what it takes.

Deep down, you know better than that voice in your head, the one filling you with doubts that you:

Need to get an official university qualification to make money from writing,

Or that you don’t have the right connections,

Or that you can’t earn well as a writer,

Or that this side hustle will take away every stitch of sacred free time you have.

You acknowledge those doubts, but they can’t stop your daydreams.

You know the ones.

The daydream where you imagine what it would be like to have your own business and make money just by typing words on a screen.

The daydream where your inbox is filled with people reaching out based on a word-of-mouth recommendation because that’s how good you are.

The daydream where you wake up feeling excited for the day because your side hustle is thriving and the bills are taken care of – and then some.

The daydream where you can get ‘out’ – whatever ‘out’ means to you. Getting out could be leaving a job you hate, travelling to a place you never thought possible, or buying things that were only on a Pinterest fantasy board.

You know exactly what you need.

A way to cut through the fluff and filler.

A way to avoid being overwhelmed.

Someone to spell out exactly how you can find people who will pay for writing. How you can get your first gigs without having years of experience behind you. How and where to pitch. How to actually put the writing together. How to protect yourself in business.

If you have any doubts about where to begin, this is the course for you! I was interested in freelance writing and looking for a course that really started with the basics. There is so much out there and I was feeling overwhelmed with no direction. When I reached out to Tayla on a call, she really took the time to understand my needs and whether Scribbling Side Hustlers was right for me, which was so beneficial and kind. I was offered the option of a payment plan and have been blown away by the course content and attentiveness of Tayla throughout! Tayla has covered every aspect of freelance writing in manageable bite-size content. There was information about how to build a portfolio, pitch and even manage your finances. Her content also came with worksheets so that you can make this course work for you. I think that would be what I valued the most about this course: I was able to apply each part to my own path, so I could see how I could build a business of my own. There was plenty of opportunity for student-led learning and research, with Tayla’s guidance. For me, this style was the perfect balance. My favorite module was the Source module at the very beginning. It helped calm a lot of my nerves and gave me the confidence to reach out to my network. It was a great way to start the course and to lay the foundations for what was to come. This course was made so much easier as the lessons were broken up into sections. I could finish a small section and come back to it later in the week which really helped me stay motivated. I have appreciated the checking in, the words of reassurance and all of the worksheets that came with the course. I am very happy to have found Scribbling Side Hustlers!

I wanted to be able to work from home when my son arrives while being able to contribute to our household needs and have financial freedom from my husband. Scribbling Side Hustlers seemed like it would set me on the right path to making that goal happen.

I’ve been tracking Tayla’s freelance career growth and it helped me realize that writing is an actual job. I subscribed to her newsletters and loved reading Tayla’s weekly tips for free. She didn’t have that ‘gatekeeper vibe’. I was worried, though, that freelance writing wouldn’t be the right fit for me. I had this little voice in my head saying I wouldn’t be good enough or capable of doing this and I tend to be anxious about starting new things.

When Tayla started offering the course, I was pleasantly surprised as I thought she’d be charging more for it, given the amount of content and the high quality of the course. In Scribbling Side Hustlers, Tayla’s teaching style is hands-on, which I love. She made me feel comfortable with asking questions without feeling stupid. You can tell that she genuinely likes teaching and freelance writing – it’s infectious.

The one-on-one element of the course helped build my confidence the most. I am very thankful to have Tayla there as a mentor helping me each step of the way and all the affirmation she provides. She offers so much one-on-one support on top of the weekly lessons. I got so much more than I expected. I realized how much work there is out there. I’m now excited to put myself out there and pitch!

I created Scribbling Side Hustlers to make the course that would have saved me countless sleepless nights, tears of frustration and hours upon hours of slogging through work that got me nowhere back when I started freelance writing as a side hustle all those years ago.

…Have we officially met?

Hey, I’m Tayla. Full-time freelance writer, former high school English teacher, mother of cats, watcher of Netflix, eater of desserts and I am on a mission to max out the pages of my passport by seeing as much of the world as I can.

I help people who have a way with words to monetize their natural talents by launching their own freelance writing side hustles.

I started freelance writing in 2018 out of sheer desperation to make an extra couple hundred dollars so that my husband and I could stay on our medical insurance.

Now we plan massive overseas trips every year to satiate our wanderlust.

I launched my business by working in the evenings, after teaching high schoolers from 7am to 4pm every single day. I put in time over the weekends (when I could).

My client list grew. I started curating my clients – turning away those that weren’t a good fit.

I raised my rates. And raised them again. And again.

My writing side hustle started earning more than my teaching salary, so I quit and went full-time with writing.

The stability of my job really mattered to me when I started my writing business. I looked at people who were full-time freelance writers and they were all urging me to “take the leap” and quit without a back-up plan.

But I was supporting myself – and others – financially. I couldn’t afford to take leaps. I needed to build my business while relying on something certain, like a steady paycheque.

And so I did. And so can you.

I want you to be in the same position: where your side hustle is so successful that you find yourself asking what you really want to do with the hours in your day. I want you to look at travel inspiration and let your decision be made based on what time of year you’d like to go, rather than what you can afford. I want you to grow your own business. So you get to be your own boss. So you can call the shots. So you can take as much leave as you want.

I want you to give yourself a raise because you can. Because you earned it. I want to teach you the shortcuts I’ve learned along the way. I want you to take the highway so you can get there a whole lot faster.

I didn’t take the highway. I took a dirt road, ended up back where I started, bust through some bushes on the side, hit a pothole, and emerged, dazed, picking stray twigs out my hair, and looking for a spare tyre. Here’s the thing about dirt roads though – now I know how to avoid them. And now I’m teaching it to you.

You can choose the dirt roads for yourself. You can spend weeks poring over Google articles, combing through YouTube footage, searching for the hidden secrets in scads of free content.

Or you can sign up for Scribbling Side Hustlers and add clients like these to your CV. We’ll work through my signature SCARF method that offers you the framework needed to build a business where you can write your way out.

I am lightyears away from where I was before taking this course and got much more than I paid for. I had zero information [about freelance writing] before and I was feeling so stuck and clueless. I knew I wanted to do something with writing and changing direction in terms of my career. Now, this whole business feels achievable. Tayla’s teaching is kind, straightforward and easy to follow. She is completely genuine – she promises nothing more than what she knows we can achieve if we put in the necessary work. Tayla’s responsiveness and patience are priceless and her teaching experience shows. I loved the course’s structure and how down-to-earth it was. This course is the perfect start that includes everything one needs to take the first steps and then keep going.

Pearl Mambana

I had just finished a course run by a prominent local university in Copywriting in Digital Marketing but I still felt so clueless about where to find work and how to start a portfolio. I didn’t know how to start as a freelancer or how to charge for my work.

After learning with Tayla, I feel like there’s a way that’s been paved for me. She’s such an amazing soul who is so passionate about teaching and freelancing. She’s extremely generous with her knowledge and the one-on-one teaching means she can tackle the questions you have and clarify any areas you’re unsure about.

She encouraged me to ‘own’ being a freelance writer and put myself out there, which helped so much in gaining traction and I’m now earning as a freelance writer. I can’t express how grateful I am for Tayla’s teaching, help, and support.

A closer look at the modules inside

A step-by-step course that teaches you how to find your first clients, create a portfolio from scratch, pitch perfectly, showcase your writing skills, and run the business of your dreams so you can call your own shots, make the money you deserve, and enjoy all the freedom that comes with it.

1

Module 1: Source

Where on earth do you find your first clients? You know you have to get the first in order to get the second, but you’re nervous (and rightly so) of the paradox where you need client testimonials to find work but you need to get work first in order to get a client testimonial. It makes your head spin.

  • Learn how to Leverage Your Leads by knowing how to identify potential clients in your existing network of friends, family and colleagues.
  • Discover what freelance platforms are, why they’re worth it…and why you might want to steer clear.
  • Get insight for how to navigate social media to find hidden job opportunities – once you know how, you’ll never browse socials the same way again.
  • Receive tried-and-tested recommendations. I’ll be telling you exactly where I go to find new work when I want to beef up my balance for the month.

This module leaves you with the knowledge of exactly where and how to grab your first clients. You’ll know how to cut through the fat to find exactly what and who you need to move forward, without being overwhelmed by the magnitude of what’s out there.

2

Module 2: Create

Every client you approach is going to ask for your portfolio. No one gets hired on a wish and a dream. They want proof, and you can offer it after taking this module.

  • Learn how to start a portfolio from scratch even if no one has hired you yet – and make sure it looks professional while you’re at it.
  • Determine the best pieces of content to be the cornerstones of your digital portfolio (and how to get that content online, even with zero experience).
  • Work out ways to get your writing linked and credited so you can start being that ‘link in bio’ person you’ve always wanted to be.

This module is all about getting you over the mental block of not having a portfolio. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step – we all start somewhere, and you are capable of providing professional proof of your talent before you get hired.

3

Module 3: Action

This is where you take your foundational knowledge and put it to work so you can make bank. You know where the clients are and you have the portfolio to make them say yes. Now it’s time to ask for what you want.

  • Learn how to pitch perfectly in journalism (hello, big by-lines!) as well as for copy and content. Get a glimpse of the buzzwords they’re waiting to see so you can take your pitch from ‘hi’ to ‘hired’.
  • Know how to price your services in a way that makes you and your client happy (and avoid that awkward “um, so, like, I’m flexible, like, what’s your budget, I don’t mind” interchange).
  • Discover the unwritten rulebook of pitching and follow-up etiquette. It’s a dance like something out of Bridgerton, minus the deeply attractive cast members (except for you, of course! You’re lovely.)

This module takes you from zero to hero when it comes to constructing a pitch from scratch. Learn what pitching is, what components need to be included (and excluded) so you can throw yourself into foreign inboxes with confidence.

4

Module 4: Research

There are courses out there filled with thousands of hours of content for you to trawl through (and the $$$$ price tag to match). By the time you get to Hour #90, you don’t even remember what was in Hour #80…starting the cycle over again. No thanks. Here you’ll learn what you really need to know to get the ball rolling.

  • Learn how to make your clients do the grunt work for you by knowing what to request as part of your project brief.
  • Discover the essentials of research so you can take any project for any client and make it a success. You don’t need to study what differentiates an article from a blog. You need to know how to research properly so that you can give your client exactly what they asked for.

This module shows you the shortcuts of research so that you can get the skeleton of a piece in place, before using your writing talent to flesh it out. It doesn’t need to be complicated.

5

Module 5: Finesse

Here’s the part where it all ties together. What differentiates an amateur from a professional? Is it a logo? An office? A website? How do you get paid when your client is international? What do you do if your client doesn’t pay?

  • Get the fundamentals in place with my Business Basics framework.
  • Learn what needs to be included in a watertight contract – and swipe my own lawyer-made and field-tested contract for your own customisation.
  • Discover the essential components of marketing so that you can rely on incoming work.

Get paid (on time) both locally and internationally by implementing tricks of the trade. You work from home as a freelance writer, so you may as well be able to work with anyone anywhere!

This module takes you from seeming like the new kid on the block to the seasoned pro that you are (or will soon be).

And if you think that just about covers everything, think again because I have even more support lined up for you with monthly group coaching calls to answer all your questions as you get started with your own freelance writing business.

Lindsay Roberts

I reached out to Tayla because I knew she was a freelance writer, and I had some questions about the journey of becoming one. I was mainly worried that I wasn’t good enough to become a freelance writer. The self-doubt kicked in quite aggressively, and I didn’t want to pursue this journey without feeling confident enough. I am starting as a freelance writer with minimal experience, and I wanted to make sure that I can achieve this if I work hard at it.

By working with Tayla, I realised that it is possible to become a freelance writer, even if I have minimal experience. She reassured me that I would get stronger at pitching my services to potential clients who pay well. I left feeling very motivated and excited that becoming a freelance writer is possible, and not just reserved for writers with degrees from Oxford and Cambridge. Tayla made me feel as if freelance writing is an accessible career for me. She took away my self-doubt and the dreaded imposter syndrome responsible for killing so many dreams.

The best part is that Tayla is very approachable and friendly. She made me feel welcome in the writing space. She had this ability to make me feel able and accepted. She listened to my concerns and gave me clear and concise action steps to work on. She listened to my concerns and guided me in a very supportive manner. She demonstrated remarkable knowledge and experience in the writing world, which made me feel very secure that I had found the right mentor and coach. She has an active learning style, making the coaching feel interactive and dual-sided.

If you are looking for someone to help you kickstart your freelancing career, I recommend choosing Tayla as your mentor. Changing careers feels overwhelming, and Tayla rapidly reshapes that overwhelm into confidence and excitement. Tayla will strategically and practically guide you to find your first client based on all the invaluable knowledge that she possesses.

I now feel that my initial worries about becoming a freelance writer are resolved. I have confidence that it is possible to change my career and that freelance writing will become my new normal. I now know that I can start pitching to potential clients tomorrow with the trust that I can deliver an excellent service. I feel delighted that I can begin to charge higher rates soon. This is so foreign to me as a former teacher. My work is valued, and I don’t have to depend on a measly teacher paycheque every month. I can also work from home and set my hours.

Your questions answered

I’ve never studied writing. Can I do this?

Of course you can. Some of the most successful freelance writers were in completely different fields – medicine, teaching, law and more. You don’t need to go back to university for another qualification. You don’t need to have studied at all, actually (which is hella frustrating when you’ve already done that, but it’s true)! What you do need, though, is a love of writing and a way with words.

Do I need to have an existing portfolio (work I’ve already done/written)?

Absolutely not. I’m here to help you create that portfolio from scratch and show you how to pull it all together so you have something to show clients when they ask for samples of your previous work.

I’d love to learn to be a freelance writer but what if I don’t have the time?

This program is only five weeks and involves just a few hours of your time in total. Recordings allow you to take in the content at your own pace and, if you’ve signed up for group coaching, those are recorded too so you can watch them whenever you have a gap. Once you’re writing, you get to define your hours. If you can put in ten per week, great. If you have one hour available, so be it!

Will this teach me about all the different types of copy (conversion emails, landing pages, white papers, case studies, captions, sales pages, product descriptions, blogs, the list goes on and on and on and -)?

It would take months (if not years) to teach you how to write every single type of copy that exists. You’re welcome to head to major copywriting companies and sign up for their copy school that charges $797 per month. And with thousands of hours to work through, you’d probably need a year-long membership to get through it all…and that’s assuming you don’t get to the end without forgetting what you learned in the first month. Scribbling Side Hustlers will teach you how to research effectively so that you feel confident writing any type of copy or content that comes your way. Minus the $$$$$ price tag and year-long commitment.

Can I do this if I’m not fluent in English?

English is the most commonly sought-after language for copy and content writing. You don’t need to be a native English speaker to do this course but, if you’re not a native speaker, you need to be fluent enough that it’s impossible for people (me/your clients) to tell. Getting to that level of fluency is not something that this includes, so you’d be better off directing your time and money towards total English proficiency before spending on something like this.

I’m uncomfortable with putting myself out there. Is freelance writing a good fit for me?

If you can get past the discomfort, then yes! If you’re scared, then do it scared. Freelance writing success hinges on letting the right people know you’re open to work and showing them what you can do. This involves pitching, posting on social media and letting your networks know what you’re about. Without putting yourself out there, no one knows you offer freelance writing and work is highly unlikely to fall into your lap. It’s okay to be nervous – I’m here to help you through that – but if you’re totally unwilling to show up for yourself, only you have the power to change that attitude.

Will you send me writing jobs or hire me?

If I decide to turn my own writing business into an agency, the writers I’ve trained and mentored will be the first people I turn to (quality control and all that jazz) but that’s not on the cards for me right now. I do send my students writing jobs that I come across, especially when I know it would be the perfect fit for them. More importantly, I teach you how to find your own writing opportunities by pointing you to the same places I look for my next gigs. I also teach you how to pitch to perfection so you can approach businesses that you love and then earn from them as a writer.

What should I do if I don’t think I can afford this?

Don’t do it. I started my writing business because I couldn’t afford my monthly living expenses. If someone had shown up then with the best offer in the world, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it back in 2018. Do not put yourself in unmanageable debt. I don’t want that. You don’t want that. That’s not how we do things here. If it’s not affordable in one payment, that’s fine – I have a payment plan on offer to help you out. But if that payment plan is still giving you pause, it’s okay. It’s not the right time. I don’t want you or your family going without just so you can learn from me. There will be a right time – just not now. And that’s okay.

With so much available online, is there a point in signing up for this?

You are intelligent and resourceful – with enough patience and time, as well as a lot of trial and error, you will likely be able to teach yourself a lot of what you need to know and that’s enough to create a writing business. If Scribbling Side Hustlers is unaffordable for you, self-learning is a great option. That said, if you’re looking for a fast-track route to getting everything you need to know in one place, this is the right space for you. Signing up for Scribbling Side Hustlers is opting to take the highway when it comes to learning instead of the winding backroads that may or may not lead to swamps.

Why should I learn from you and not someone else?

Because I’ve been where you are. Back in 2018, I was working full-time as a teacher and needed to make more money to make ends meet. All the so-called ‘support’ I came across encouraged me to quit my job and leap into freelance writing full time. They said if I wasn’t prepared to do it, then I didn’t believe in myself enough. Belief wasn’t the issue – a steady salary was. So I taught myself how to become a freelance writer as a side hustle. Through my side hustle, I solved our financial troubles and then some. I’ve been able to afford traveling extensively and I’ve built my writing career to the point that I was able to leave teaching full-time. I still teach, not out of financial necessity but rather out of love for the profession. That’s another reason I’m the right person to learn from. I’m two things: a teacher and a writer. This is a program that teaches you how to write. And I’m never – ever – going to tell you to quit your stable job. Freelance writing is a career that can be built in your spare time. You’re wise enough to know when to make the leap.

What if I change my mind?

That’s okay! Scribbling Side Hustlers is risk-free. If you aren’t satisfied after six days of teaching, I wouldn’t feel right with keeping your money so I’ve made it super easy for you to opt out with a money-back guarantee. You just need to let me know via email before the second week of teaching becomes available and I’ll remove you from the platform and refund you. No strings attached, no forms to fill out, no need to explain why, no questioning. If anything, it’s a risky move for me, not you, because there’s so much value packed into every single week that you’ll be walking away with 20% of my knowledge for free if you opt out. But it’s not for nothing that I’m confident you’ll stay. Past students have praised Scribbling Side Hustlers for giving them so much more value than the price tag indicates, and I trust you’ll feel the same way.

How long is the program?

5 weeks of content, covering one module each week. The content for each module is no more than two hours. If you’ve opted for Tier 2 or 3, then you have group coaching calls which are recorded for you if you can’t attend live. These are as long as needed to answer your questions for the week! If we get through all your questions within 30 minutes, then that’s how long it’ll be. If it takes three hours, then so be it! I’m not going to leave anyone with an unanswered question. That said, if you don’t want to be saddled with listening to questions for hours, watch the replay whenever it suits you and digest the Q&A in your own time. You can even submit your question to me via email and I’ll make sure it’s answered during the Q&A session.

Is there a payment plan?

Yes. Each tier has a payment plan to make this accessible for more people.

Am I guaranteed to find work after taking this?

I cannot guarantee that you’ll find work. You need to be prepared for rejections and you need to keep trying anyway until you get that first ‘yes’. If you have writing talent, then it’s only a matter of time but it often requires patience.

Why do you keep going on about needing a ‘way with words’?

Because it’s the single most important factor for success as a freelance writer. People who have a natural way with words don’t struggle when they sit at a keyboard (or at least, they struggle less than others). This lets them write quickly and creatively, which allows them to make money from the craft.

The Create Module felt like a Eureka moment! It was ridiculously helpful to know what to do to find work and show off your talents when you haven’t had any work yet. I also loved the Finesse Module. It was amazing because it was so practical – the contract and invoice templates are exactly what every new freelance writer needs in their arsenal to be professional. I found the lessons on pricing yourself really valuable. It’s difficult to know where to start and I’ve always battled with underselling myself. The modules were the perfect amount to take on each week and were super packed with valuable information. It really covers all the bases in terms of starting freelancing. I wish I’d had this two years ago! It’s packed with valuable nuggets that I could use and put into practice straight away. Tayla is a fantastic teacher. She’s kind, approachable, informative and conversational. She explains things in an easy-to-follow style and is more than happy to help you through queries. Every lesson is sprinkled with her bright and funny personality. You can have a freelance writing business on the go in just five weeks, which is just incredible.

In the words of General Washington in the greatest musical of our time, Hamilton… “Can I be real a second?”

Bluntly, things won’t change until you do. Until you back yourself. Until you realize that you have the power to shift your reality. It’s at your fingertips. Well, technically, it’s using your fingertips.

You can figure it out alone if you’d prefer that.

Or you can learn from someone who’s been exactly where you are.

I’m a teacher who started writing to make a change in my life. Now, I travel every single year. I work from home. I increase my rates when I want to. I take breaks when I need it.

I wrote my way out.

And I want to help you do it too. I want to see your name under the success stories you’ve read on this page.

When I talk about writing your way out, what does that mean to you?

Travelling more?

Unlimited vacation days?

Flexible work schedules?

Choosing who you work with?

Going to the spa now and then?

Having the option to leave a difficult work environment?

What choices are you making today that will get you closer to where you want to be? It’s a difficult conversation…but it’s an important one.

Tayla’s teaching background is such an advantage as she conveys the material in a way that goes beyond just reading the content. She explains thoroughly and uses good examples. She’s also encouraging as we go along – I wish I’d had teachers like her in school who made me feel motivated to succeed. I thoroughly enjoyed each week’s content. It didn’t take me too long to get through everything and the pace of the lessons was easy to follow (especially for someone like me who tends to get easily distracted). The course came with all the necessary materials as well as live Zoom Q&A calls for clarity, plus a lot of bonus material like videos and seeing the lessons applied to real-life examples. I now know how to get started, where to source clients, how to pitch, and things like tax and contract considerations! Thank you, Tayla for imparting your knowledge. I feel so empowered now!
